The thermal spa has ancient origins where mention can be found in the works of the Greek philosopher Strabone, and by the Roman natural scientist Plinius "the old".
The ancient Greeks were the first to colonise the island, naming it "Pithaecusa", however it was the Romans who highly appreciated the virtues of the mineral thermal springs and began curing ailments and using the waters for beauty treatments. They actually put the springs of Casamicciola under the protection of Apollo, God of Health, and built a luxurious thermal spa centre which became a renowned place of recreation for the Roman population.
